My Likes: I loved this dystopian theme that the book carried and the story line was pretty solid. The characters were well thought out and I fell in love with Dani instantly. The book was written in great detail so I could really picture in my mind what was going on.
My Dislikes: I seem to have more dislikes than likes for this book and I hate that. I really wanted to enjoy this book because like I said, I love dystopian themes and the story line (people turning into zombie-like creatures ((the crazies))) was pretty awesome. At times I felt as if the book just rambled on. I literally skimmed over parts of the book just to get away from all the ramblings. Plus, on top of that…these people seemed more in the age range of 18-19, not in their twenties and I say this because the e-mails back in forth were, at times, pretty childish. I understand that Dani and Zoe are best friends and that they are worried about each other but really?? I’m going to be honest…after about the fourth or fifth e-mail I just skimmed over the rest. Also, what the heck??? Places have shut down, the world has downsized by like….ALOT and the internet is unharmed?? I don’t get it. I really don’t. Because of this and a few other situations this book really didn’t seem plausible.
My summary: We start the book off with Dani and her take on what’s happening around her. Everyone is getting the flu. EVERYONE. People are missing school, work, etc and it’s getting pretty bad. Callie, Dani’s roommate has gotten the dreadful disease and so Dani is really worried. Within the first few pages of the book Dani e-mail’s her best friend Zoe to ask if she’s okay and how she’s been. After that Dani celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend, Cam. She gets into an altercation with another girl and that’s that. When she arrives home she finds that her roommate has died and also hours later, the girl she has the altercation with. So, as we can see everyone around Dani is dying. She’s getting scared and is really worried for her family.
The book then switches to her best friend, Zoe. (This happens quite a bit in the book..so much, that it became dizzying.) She’s going through about the same thing Dani is. People around her are dying and she’s worried about her family. Through all this several text messages and e-mails were sent back in forth between Zoe and Dani again. *sigh*
We then find that Cam and Dani are both sick with the flu. They hurt everywhere and cannot stop vomiting. Eventually Cam doesn’t make it. His body just gives out and right around this time is when Zoe’s brother, Jason (who Dani has had a crush on since she was a little girl) shows up with a team of people and gets Dani up and washes her up.
–this is where everything starts getting good.–
Dani eventually leaves with Jason to go to a compound of people who are healthy and living. They have to scourge the area for food, gas, and necessities and then they’re off. Throughout all of this the people who have actually survived this weird flu epidemic come to realize that they are changing. Something is happening to them and they all are developing strange abilities. (I’ve spoiled enough for you but I won’t spoil anything about the abilities.) All I’m going to say is it’s pretty neat. But with the strange abilities happening to these people some can’t quite deal with them so that’s where the crazies come in.
While everyone is dealing with this. Dani and Jason are basically wanting each other but not wanting each other. Another girl (who Jason messes around with) hates Dani because she can tell Jason has a soft spot for Dani. Things eventually blow up and Dani leaves. She doesn’t want to put people in anymore danger (you’ll just have to read to find out what I’m referring to). Things get even crazier for Dani because she has weird dreams of a guy helping her determine her ability.
Again, through all of this Dani and Zoe e-mail each other and are trying to find their way back to one another. This eventually happens after Zoe gets attacked (a lot), meets up with some good guys and not so good guys, and Dani’s gang meets up with a crazy leader with a lot of people who have been turned into sex slaves due to the leader’s ability. Oh, and Jason and Dani’s chemistry reach omg….they are finally together level.
After Zoe and Dani meet back up together the book ends and you can tell there will be a sequel.
Would I recommend this book? Even though I gave this book 2/5 stars I’m going to recommend it because it is a good book regardless of the e-mails, and un-plausible situation. I wanted to like this book and more than likely I will read the sequel. I just hope since the girls are together there will be no more e-mails!!!!! The book did have it’s glorious moments. The fight scenes were pretty good and I definitely want to know more of Jason and Dani’s relationship. Also, I really, really can’t wait to see what everyone’s abilities will do later on.
