WHILE IT LASTS by Abbi Glines
Publication Date: August 2013
My Rating: 5 stars
A steamy Alabama summer spent bailing hay was definitely not the plan. But that’s what happens when you land yourself a DUI. And there’s only one way Cage can salvage his baseball scholarship–the one thing he truly values besides the girl now engaged to his former roommate–and that involves sweeping out barns and babysitting cows. No hot girls in bikinis. No late-night hookups. No fun. Just him and the cows. Oh–and the uptight, snarky brunette with the biggest blue eyes he’s ever seen.
Cage is dying to strip her down–physically and mentally–in the back of the barn. And yet it’s hands off the farmer’s daughter. Not only is she somehow immune to Cage’s usually successful advances, but behind those big blue eyes and fiery temper of hers, Eva Brooks is still nursing a broken heart. The last thing she needs is the arrogant Cage York flashing his irritating (though admittedly gorgeous) smile in her direction.
But as the humidity rises, Cage’s southern charm begins to crack Eva’s carefully built walls as the two learn that what they want, and need, may be something they never saw coming.
This book took my heart.. squeezed it until it shattered into a tiny million pieces.. and then shoved it back in my chest like nothing ever happened!
Everything about this book was amazing. The way the untamable Cage York was finally tamed, the fact that the girl, Eva, wasn’t some bimbo who did whatever he wanted because he looks like a freakin’ god, the way Abbi made me laugh, ugly cry, and want to throw this book across the room a few times….I can go on and on about how incredible this book is.
If you’ve read the first two book in the Sea Breeze series (BREATHE & BECAUSE OF LOW) then you know how awesome Abbi Glines’ characters are. They are real and relatable and you can’t help but to cheer with them when they are on top of the world and hurt with them when they’re not. WHILE IT LASTS is no different. Cage York is the ultimate bad boy and Eva Brooks is a good girl who has had a rough lot in life. Together they show each other that there is more out there for both of them.
The opening of this book had me ugly-crying in a matter of minutes. The circumstances surrounding Eva was heart-wrenching and when Cage learns of this I love how he deals with it. Under that hard exterior of his lies a gentle and caring man who Eva comes to know.
“I wanted to be the one to hold you while you cried and dealt with the coming change. But you wouldn’t let me. I’ve never wanted in, Eva. Not until you.” –Cage
Cage shows a different side of himself in WHILE IT LASTS compared to BECAUSE OF LOW and readers can’t help but to immediately swoon after him. Yeah, we all were infatuated with him in BECAUSE OF LOW but you will fall in love with him in WHILE IT LASTS. He treats Eva differently. She’s not just some girl to him once he gets to know her. I gotta tell ya’ll…watching the bad boy Cage York fall in love was amazing!
I might not be goo enough for her, but I was gonna damn well try my hardest to become worthy. “I can’t hurt her, and I will not leave her.” –Cage
Eva Brooks is damaged but not broken and she fits her attraction to Cage fiercely. She doesn’t want to fall for him. She wants to stay in the past where her life was perfect but the world doesn’t stop for her and she soon realizes that everyone has to move on no matter how much they wish things didn’t turn out the way they did. She’s caught between living in the memories of her past or moving on and finding herself again. Eva’s characterization is flawless. She’s likable because she gives Cage a run for his money. She does’t back down from him and it’s a hilarious thing to watch. She isn’t they typical female that Cage usually goes for and it’s refreshing (for us and for Cage, apparently).
Abbi Glines outdid herself with WHILE IT LASTS. She created characters that stick with you for days after you’ve read their story and crazy twists and turns within the story that leave you breathless one minute and wanting to scream you head off the next! The story flowed perfectly and I was entranced from page one…I didn’t want to put this book down. Ever.
