Love, loss, friendship, and the betrayals of the past all collide in this first women’s fiction novel from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (Autoboyography, Dating You / Hating You).
The story of the heart can never be unwritten.
Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.
But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.
Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.
When I think of all around amazing love stories, ya know…the ones up there with Nicholas Sparks…my mind automatically wanders to Christina Lauren. They have a way of pulling readers in and setting their hearts aflame. Every single story…every character…is beautifully crafted, and I always feel a since of loss when finishing their books.
Love and Other Words has quickly become one of my top reads of 2018. Everything about this book is utter perfection. The characters are relatable, quirky, and are the kind you wish were your friends. The plot pulled me in and captured my very soul. Ahh, this book crushed me and put me back together in the most glorious way. This isn’t your every day, light read romance. This book will suck your soul in and you’ll definitely come out a different person on the other side.
Macy has suffered loss at an early age and has the emotional battle scars to show for it. She’s such a compelling character; I believe she will be a relatable character for anyone who has had any type of loss in their life. Christina Lauren brings her pain to the forefront within every chapter of this book; it’s a tangible type of pain…I could literally feel the loss in her. I connected so easily with her, that I felt, for a time, as if she were explaining my pains. When she meets Elliot readers can easily see the hole he helps fill inside her. It was an amazing thing to witness.
Elliot, for the most part, was the perfect friend, boyfriend, and soulmate. From the very beginning he was like a soothing salve for Macy’s heart and watching him love her was something that will leave you breathless just from thinking about it for many days after the book has ended. They sort of grew up together and were each others’ everything in so many ways until they weren’t. Something happens that not only changes their fate, but impacts Macy in such a way that leaves her, not broken, but shattered.
Overall, this book touched on every single emotion there is. It was such a great book all around and I would recommend this book to any and everyone. This isn’t your typical Christina Lauren book…it’s so much more. You see their writing style throughout the novel, but they bring you this story that is genuine and so raw that it will leave you aching on the inside.
I loved this book. There is no other way to describe it. End of story.
