Since I ran away for the night, danced in New York streets, and almost got killed in an alley by two thieves. Until he showed up and saved me.
Since I threw a drink at the man my father expected me to marry, then found myself slammed against a wall with Penn Everett’s seductive voice whispering a proposal I couldn’t refuse.
To fall into hate with the man who reminded me of so many things and hid so much behind his lies. He couldn’t be the man who saved me three years ago…but there’s something so familiar…
For our relationship to switch from no-strings to marriage. He announced it to my father–he’s ecstatic. He told my friends–they’re shocked. But he didn’t ask me, he commanded me–and I’m livid.
For his lies to slowly steal my heart and make me believe, hope…trust.
For his truth to destroy me
Before I begin I would like to first point out that this book does, in fact, have a cliffhanger. So you’ll definitely be wanting more!!! Luckily the 2nd book, Throne of Truth, is just around the corner (releasing 2/28/17)!!! I’d also like to point out that this book does not have the typical Pepper Winter darkness to it that readers have come to know and love about her. With that being said, I found it rather refreshing and it still pulled me in and left me wanting more. This book is still intense and very much complicated…the way a Pepper Winters book should be!
The overall storyline flowed flawlessly and it kept me intrigued the entire time. The complexities of the plot along with lies, deception, and loss will keep you on your toes wondering where Pepper will take you next. She definitely has a way of wrapping you up in her unique writing style and descriptive sensual situations.
“Because of him, I was unhinged and grinding with insanity, giving into madness I’d never understood.”
The characters have an amazing depth to them. Pepper executed their interactions, mannerisms, and utlimately their chemistry perfectly. I couldn’t get enough of them together. Noelle is sheltered and privileged, being the heiress of Belle Elle. She’s a powerful woman on the outside, but down deep she’s an innocent, naive girl begging to experience life in a way she has never been able to before. The alluring, mysterious Penn is possessive and dominant in a way Noelle isn’t used to. He lets her know from the beginning that he wants her in his bed. Even though Noelle doesn’t like Penn as a person (and I admit..he wasn’t very easy to like at times), she can’t help the chemistry they have.
“He looked arctic and unreadable. He smelled expensive and impenetrable. He sounded powerful and untouchable. My worst nightmare wrapped in perfection.”
Even with all the sexiness and intense chemistry, this book had more. Pepper Winters out did herself on this storyline. It entraps you, steals your ability to move forward until every last word is read, and even then you’ll be begging for more. You’ll fall in love with Noelle and Penn and the story surrounding how they came to meet. I’m definitely counting down the hours until I can dive back into this intricately crafted world!
“We’re all a little corrupt, doing our best to fit into a world that’s broken but still demands perfection…Thieves can become saints. Saints can become thieves.”
