How did my life get so broken? It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker exboyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.
And then, she meets Everett, who changes her entire existence.
Everett is an outsider who’s housesitting his family’s mansion off the coast, and for reasons Lacey can’t understand, he’s completely transfixed by her. He seems determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. She desperately yearns to trust him, but what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her is a lie?

Wow. This story had me on edge throughout the entire thing. Sara Fawkes’ writing style blew me away and kept me intrigued until the very end. I couldn’t put it down. I had the whole thing read within a few hours of starting it. It was just that good.
The storyline is by far one of the most original I have read in awhile and I loved that. It was like a breath of fresh air. I also loved the fact that it shows the cruelty of a certain epidemic within our generation. (Not going into anymore details on that!) I’m not sure if she meant to but she did and hopefully the people who read this will take a step back and evaluate themselves to make sure they’re not one of those people.
The characters are easily likable and to an extent well developed. Everett is a mystery and I wanted more of him right after I was introduced to him. Everything about him is downright sexy..from his dimples to his freakin’ name!! Once we start to get to know this character you find out that there is definitely more to him than what he’s telling. Lacey has had a rough life. The things done to her are horrible and your heart can’t help but to break for her. She’s a strong individual but it’s understandable that in her situation people can only take so much. I really connected with Lacey and I feel as if any reader will because everyone at one point or another deals with what she has to endure from others on a regular basis. Her home life is also a wreck and she’s left being the only responsible adult for her baby brother. The depth of this character’s personality was awesome. You really can’t help but to cheer for Lacey.
Together Everett and Lacey are magnificent. Everett teaches Lacey that there is still some good left in the world and Lacey teaches Everett that he is worthy of love. It was pretty awesome to watch these characters come together because the pace of the whole story was flawless. It wasn’t rushed but it moved along enough to keep readers interested and wanting more. The only reason this didn’t get 5 stars is because I felt that Lacey’s character could have been more developed in some areas. We get a glimpse into the horrific experience she went through but I kept wanting to know more. How did she get into that situation? Who were the culprits behind it? I kept mentally begging Sara to give us more background. We saw how this specific event shaped her but I wanted to “see” the experience in more detail. I think it would have really made Lacey a well-rounded character.
Overall this story was captivating and enthralling. The plot was remarkable and the ending was beautiful. Sara Fawkes gave us mystery, drama, heartbreak, and an HEA all in one book. I will definitely be re-reading this book soon. It is one that will stay with you for day after you finish reading it.
