BREATHE by Abbi Glines
Publication Date: June 2013
My Rating: 4 stars
It was only supposed to be a summer job, not a summer fling. Just a quick way for seventeen-year-old Sadie to earn some money to support her very helpless–and very pregnant–single mother. But even with the help of her cute and friendly coworker, Marcus, Sadie learns firsthand that working gas a domestic servant is tough, especially when the house is owned by none other than Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rock stars in the world. Sadie’s instructions are simple–she is to be neither seen nor heard. But not even Sadie can turn invisible when Jax Stone catches a glimpse of her in a maid’s uniform
Jax Stone can have any girl he wants, but it only takes one quick look at Sadie’s soft, nervous smile and he is a dead man. But he can tell Marcus wants her too. And though he feels an instant connection with Sadie, Jax knows it would never work. In his crazy world, relationships mean nothing but heartbreak, and Sadie deserves better than that. Much better. So he fights the attraction, keeping his distance from Sadie and her big blue eyes, her long blond hair, her tan legs…
Oh, she’s not making it easy for him.
But who was he kidding? Not even a rock star can pull off the impossible.
Jax Stone and Sadie White are the ultimate book couple. Abbi Glines has such a way with words and her writing style will leave you on the floor in a big mushy puddle. She can wrap up a good plot with awesome characters in one big steamy package and believe me…she did just that with BREATHE.
We meet Sadie when she has to take over her mom’s job as a domestic servant to the elite Jax Stone because her mom is too pregnant to keep working. We quickly learn Sadie is the parent in their relationship and automatically readers can’t help but to sympathize with her. Her character is written in such a way that even though she came from nothing she doesn’t sit by and take things she doesn’t deserve. I fell in love with her character immediately because she was so likable, determined, and self-sufficient.
Somewhere around the time I turned eight, I realized my mother needed help, and I began growing up quicker than normal children. The more I offered to take on, the more she gave me. By the time I turned eleven, I did it all. –Sadie, BREATHE.
Jax is a famous teenage rockstar but we come to find out that he is so much more than that. He’s not cocky or insensitive and believe me, I fell hard for him. We are introduced to Jax at a time where the life of fame and fortune has lost its appeal to Jax and he has grown weary of the lifestyle he leads. So, it’s no wonder that when he meets Sadie and she doesn’t immediately fall and worship at his feet he can’t help but be fascinated with her. She’s different and basically everything he didn’t know he needed. The only problem? He knows she’s better off without him.
You’re everything I write about in my songs but can never have. –Jax, BREATHE.
Even though Jax knows Sadie is better off without him he can’t help but to feel jealous over Marcus, Sadie’s coworker, when he sees they are growing closer together. Marcus is such a great guy and he is an even greater friend to Sadie, but will that friendship grow into something more like Marcus hopes or will Jax swoop in and stake his claim??
He seems like a man who knows what he wants, and the problem is, he wants what I want. If it were anything or anyone else, I could stand back and let him take it…But I can’t let him have you.–Jax, BREATHE.
Jax and Sadie’s romance is something I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Abbi knows the perfect balance between drama and sexiness; raw emotion and playfulness. Her work is truly something to behold. It’s like I could actually feel the love Jax had for Sadie pouring off the pages and it was an awesome experience.
“Nothing I have ever experienced has ever been that damn sexy. No, that doesn’t even describe it. It was the hottest thing–no, it was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. I”m gonna want more. You…you’re gonna own me, Sadie White.” –Jax, BREATHE.
I seriously loved everything about this book. The characters were well-developed and relatable. Everyone knows how that “I want something I could never have” emotion feels and Abbi Glines displays it perfectly. The plot was awesomely written! I was hooked from page one and couldn’t put this book down. The first book in the Sea Breeze series always leaves me breathless and wanting more when I read it and I will be forever grateful to Ms. Glines for giving us this beautiful story.
